ACLS is an advanced, instructor-led classroom course that highlights the importance of team dynamics and communication, systems of care and immediate post-cardiac-arrest care. It also covers airway management and related pharmacology.In this course, skills are taught in large, group sessions and small, group learning and testing stations where case-based scenarios are presented.  

This initial two day course is for those who have never taken ACLS before or whose certification is expired.  Participants must attend both consecutive days of the initial course.

Current American Heart Association Health Care Provider Basic Life Support (CPR) certification is also required. St. Joseph's Health ONLY recognizes American Heart Association certifications. No exceptions. 

All students must obtain a student manual.  The manual must be brought to class for use as a resource during the course as well as the written examination.  Additionally, all students are required to complete the online pre-course self assessment with a score of 70% or higher.  The link for the pre-course assessment is:  https://elearning.heart.org/course/423   If you have never accessed AHA elearning, you will be asked to set up an account.  

 You must print the assessment results and present them to the instructor at the beginning of class.  You will not be admitted to the course if you do not present this document to the instructor.

The American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support for Health Care Provider is a four hour course.  This course is designed for those in the medical field who require the two year certification.  The AHA’s BLS Course provides the foundation for saving lives from cardiac arrest. It teaches both single-rescuer and team basic life support skills for application in both prehospital and in-facility environments, with a focus on high-quality CPR and team dynamics.

Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) is a classroom, video-based, Instructor-led course in which a series of simulated pediatric emergencies are used to reinforce the important concepts of a systematic approach to pediatric assessment, basic life support, PALS treatment algorithms, effective resuscitation and team dynamics. The goal of the PALS Course is to improve the quality of care provided to seriously ill or injured children, resulting in improved outcomes.  This full two day course is for those who have never taken PALS before or whose certification is expired.
